SharePoint Conference 2019 - I will be there!
2018 has been a great year for me. I first really started speaking at SharePoint Saturday events at the tail end of 2016 and it has been an amazing experience ever since. Traveling all across the country and sharing my experiences with others, meeting new people and visiting new places has been an incredible journey. A special thank you goes to my wife Paulina, and my 2 boys Christian and Matthew for being so supportive.
The SharePoint Conference has always been the biggest and brightest Microsoft conference each and every year. Not only because of the great new content and product announcements but because of the incredible support from our amazing SharePoint Community. It is truly nothing like I have ever seen and is second to none among all of the IT communities out there. Just as SharePoint is the anchor to everything Office 365, the SharePoint Community is the anchor to everything Microsoft. I have attended many SharePoint Conferences in my day, and never did I entertain the thought that I might one day speak at one. Well in May 2019, I will be in Las Vegas sharing my United Airlines SharePoint story with you and I couldn't be more excited.
United Airlines: Journey to SharePoint 2016 and Beyond
In my session, I will take you on a journey that I have spent several years traveling at United Airlines. The upgrade from SharePoint 2010 to SharePoint 2016 (or SharePoint Online) is a very familiar path for most, but not always the most straight forward. Depending on how large your farm is and how much content and custom solutions you have, it will more than likely translate into how complicated your migration will be.
There are a number of things that I will share with you, including things you should do before you even consider migrating/upgrading to the next version of SharePoint. I will talk about several of the challenges that my team and I faced as well as how we overcame them. Everything from full trust solutions, email enabled lists, custom site templates, infrastructure challenges, resource constraints... you name it, we probably faced it.
Also from a business and management perspective, I will discuss how I was able to navigate a very large corporate environment to get the project funded and moving forward. I will also outline several things that I did to manage this project effectively. I will show you how I did that, and I will also give you several examples of the many artifacts that I created to help make my life so much easier.
Anytime you take on a large project of any kind, communication is definitely key. It is important for your team members to know what role they are supposed to play and it is equally important for your management team to understand your progress as you are making your way closer to the finish line. Communication again is key... communication to the users, communication to your team as well as other teams that will be assisting you on your big day.
Once you have your plan put together, then the rest of it is execution. Execute the plan but be flexible because there will be challenges along the way. Manage your risks and try to deal with each one before they spill over the dam.
